<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Taong Putik, literally means “mud person”. As early as 4:00 am every June 24, the villagers of Brgy. Bibiclat in Aliaga (Nueva Ecija, Philippines) would flock the rice paddies to coat themselves with thin mud, green vines and dry banana leaves before walking to the church, and begging for candles (or money to buy them) along the way. Through this process, they’d become a </span><em><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">taong putik.</span></em><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> It might look creepy, but it is actually an interesting religious practice.</span></div>

Men, women and even children are joining this festival. They go from a house to another to ask for candles or even money to buy candles. If rejected, they will wipe mud on the face of person who doesn’t give anything. After collecting candles from different houses, participants gather around the plaza and light the candles. They will offer prayers for thanksgiving and show their gratefulness on the blessing bestowed by their patron Saint John the Baptist. This is followed by an outdoor mass to bless the day of the festival. - </span><b><i><a href="http://www.traveltothephilippines.info/2012/12/05/witness-and-be-amazed-at-the-nueva-ecija-taong-putik-mud-man-festival/"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">http://www.traveltothephilippines.info/2012/12/05/witness-and-be-amazed-at-the-nueva-ecija-taong-putik-mud-man-festival/</span></a></i></b></span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Nobody knows exactly when the Taong Putik Festival started. One legend says the image of the patron saint which was brought to Bibiclat by early Ilocano settlers, helped in driving away poisonous snakes from the village. The name "Bibiclat" came from the Ilocano word "</span><i><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">biclat</span></i><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">" meaning snake. Another legend says that when Japanese soldiers during World War II were about to execute all the men in the village in retaliation for the death of 13 fellow soldiers, it rained so hard that the male villagers had to be herded into the church to seek shelter. After a while, the Japanese soldiers had a change of mind and set their captives free. The residents attributed this to a miracle of Saint John the Baptist, and vowed to pay homage to him on his feast day by wearing costumes patterned after his attire -- this time, using native materials. - </span><i><a href="http://monvalmonte.com/nuevaecijajournal/taongputik/index.html"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">http://monvalmonte.com/nuevaecijajournal/taongputik/index.html</span></a></i></div>

<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">The newest Philippine festival
with a historical twist unfolded in Cavite, the country’s seat of independence.
In time for the Independence Day, the town of Imus in Cavite,
commemorates every May 24th the victory of the Battle of Alapan that paved way
to the first Philippine Republic when the Philippine Flag was first unfurled on
May 28, 1898. Imus, dubbed as the country’s flag capital, celebrate the
Wagayway Festival every May 24th-28th as a commencement of Kalayaan 2008.</span>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Marinduque is considered as the Lenten Mecca of the Southern Tagalog because
of the Moriones
Festival. Morion means “mask” or “visor,” a part of the medieval Roman armor
which covers the face. Moriones, on the other hand, refers to the masked and
costumed penitents who march around the town for seven days searching for
Longinus. Morions roam the streets in town from Holy Monday to Easter Sunday
scaring the kids, or engaging in antics or surprises to draw attention. This is
a folk-religious festival that re-enacts the story of Longinus, a Roman
centurion who was blind in one eye. The festival is characterized by colorful
Roman costumes, painted masks and helmets, and brightly-colored tunics. - <em>visitmarinduque.com</em></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The Moriones is an annual festival held on Holy Week on the island of Marinduque, Philippines. The "Moriones" are men and women in costumes and masks replicating the garb of biblical Roman soldiers as interpreted by local folks. The Moriones or Moryonan tradition has inspired the creation of other festivals in the Philippines where cultural practices or folk history is turned into street festivals. - <em>wikipedia.org</em></span><br />

Celebrated every June 27-29 of every year, the
feast of St. Peter is observed with a fluvial parade with gaily decorated
motorboats and colorful bancas roving up and down the Pampanga River. The image
of St. Peter, called Apung Iru by the locals, is carried through town to the
river, where a lavish decorated pagoda mounted on a barge awaits. The image is
placed on the pagoda and devotees dance and pray before it. The 3-day
celebration honoring Apung Iru starts on June 27 and culminates on June 29 when
the image is brought back to its shrine at Capalanagan.</div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The festival is a confluence of a famous festival in San Carlos City: the Nabingkalan Tattoo Festival, and its highlight, the Dances of Flowers. From the two concepts, Pintaflores officially became the city's official festival in 1992.</span></div>

<span lang="EN-PH">“Bambanti” is the Ilocano
word for scarecrow. Though scary, Bambanti has been the sentinel or guardian of
the fields which farmers attributed their good harvest of rice and corn, the
prime agricultural product of Isabela. The Scarecrow, in the pervading pop
culture, is often perceived as unusual, frightening, and an object of curiosity.
In reality however, the Scarecrow remains a beneficial component of the
agricultural sector. Faithfully serving as the guardian of the crops, its
unwavering presence witnesses the stages of growth and generous yield that
sustains the livelihood for the agricultural community. Standing tall and proud,
the Scarecrow personifies the agricultural heritage of Isabela as it continues
being the farmer’s ally in producing rice and corn, the region’s main
products.</span></span></div>

Bambanti Festival is
the mother of all festivals in the province. The festival opens with
merrymaking such as street dancing and float parade. Participants are dressed up
in ornate costumes and body paints and gyrating to the sounds of drums, gongs,
and other musical instruments displaying the rich cultural legacy and artistry
of a true blooded Isabelino. During the festival, tourist and the locales will
get a chance to see trade fairs, exhibits, taste of Isabela’s cuisine, arts and
crafts and other cultural activities.</span></div>

Bambanti Festival is a tribute for the
bountiful yield despite the post harvest calamities that struck the province
late last year. This year, Bambanti Festival spells an encompassing development
on tourism, trade, investment and environment, focusing on the marketing and
promotion of the province of Isabela - it’s community life, history and

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It is during the month of May when Filipino devotees to the Blessed Virgin from different parts of the country throng on the hills of Antipolo to make a pilgrimage at the shrine of Nuestra Señora de la Paz y Buenviaje (Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage). </span><br />

<div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The most stereotyped Antipolo-pilgrimage scene was that of a woman lying comfortable in a hammock or duyan while in her <em>Maria Clara</em> dress. Alejandro revealed that both “sexes travelled by the duyan” and the “hammock was the Antipolo Transportation System. There were no roads to Antipolo –only footpaths. The most fashionable way to traverse the seven hills to Antipolo was in these primitive hammock-carriages. They were the original Philippine pedicabs.” However, the extinction of the hammock came when the railway transportation in the Philippines extended it line all the way to Antipolo in 1908.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />

</div><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The <a href="http://bestphilippinefestivals.blogspot.com/2011/11/sublian-festival-in-batangas.html">Sublian Festival</a> was started in 1988 on the annual observation of the city hood of <a href="http://bestphilippinefestivals.blogspot.com/2011/11/sublian-festival-in-batangas.html">Batangas City</a>. The objective is to renew the practice of the subli.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So, what is a subli?</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">A <a href="http://bestphilippinefestivals.blogspot.com/2011/11/sublian-festival-in-batangas.html">subli</a> is presented during a feast, as ceremonial worship dance in honor to the <a href="http://bestphilippinefestivals.blogspot.com/2011/11/sublian-festival-in-batangas.html">Holy Cross</a>. The image of the Holy Cross was found during the Spanish rule in the town of Alitagtag. It is the patron saint of ancient town of Bauan. The dance is indigenous to the province of Batangas.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOV7diB2zHLydwRqd6eIvJZMvX2LVhhWf8y4BwaVeSPWxgWZgb6SMAkms7PtlF5-SnxMYRQpu-GxoD3HP2W2CNRy51Ra05p0pyBsG4whM3F3Np5qUr6kDHV87PHf9kxHPmOCRKrzoQ_Zd2/s1600/Sublian+Festival2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOV7diB2zHLydwRqd6eIvJZMvX2LVhhWf8y4BwaVeSPWxgWZgb6SMAkms7PtlF5-SnxMYRQpu-GxoD3HP2W2CNRy51Ra05p0pyBsG4whM3F3Np5qUr6kDHV87PHf9kxHPmOCRKrzoQ_Zd2/s1600/Sublian+Festival2.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The subli is made up of lengthy prayers, songs and dances in predetermined arrangement. The dancers are made up of one, two or eight couples. The male dancers shuffle in intense fashion and hit the ground using a bamboo stick, while the female, dance with a sophisticated wrist and finger movement. </span><br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/ZLN7blGrzB0?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div><br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The parade usually starts in morning on the 23rd of July after the floral offering. It is commonly participated by the city government employees, non-government organization, schools and socio-civic organization. </span><br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Participants come in native attire with adorned subli hats to symbolize Batangueño attributes and customs. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzpctehaa3gfffuU6udrMAGHvuhD1NnSyiu4cp8wOqaVjQOrii7Fz8y4A7V512ZG579mgvl8Wz2jE7raWFP12Cn1iEGjCVLM___GCgKuPHGOnR6W6TX3eXxg_fhwDrSR22mA6BYVOFS26B/s1600/Sublian+Festival4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzpctehaa3gfffuU6udrMAGHvuhD1NnSyiu4cp8wOqaVjQOrii7Fz8y4A7V512ZG579mgvl8Wz2jE7raWFP12Cn1iEGjCVLM___GCgKuPHGOnR6W6TX3eXxg_fhwDrSR22mA6BYVOFS26B/s320/Sublian+Festival4.jpg" width="213" /></a></div><br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The best bit of the event is the Foundation Day and the Sublian sa Kalye (in the street), where partakers will march and dance the subli on the streets. There are around a thousand students who join and perform a street dancing subli. The parade usually takes at least an hour or more to complete.</span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">After the <a href="http://bestphilippinefestivals.blogspot.com/2011/11/sublian-festival-in-batangas.html">Sublian Parade</a>, programs are scheduled for the whole day at the City Hall Complex. </span><br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHpqV6_MB1uS9DvHVcv-nhyphenhyphenuM0c4HBWrr9mgbk7jlEWtiL91HBamhhqS3BXuc7K64f65qDtRJtwhm1XNm4v5glV_x6v-tXBxIri6Sj2hoHQ2rVDCoA9GytZx17RCsOF8qy7xx07RCdDkBa/s1600/Sublian+Festival5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHpqV6_MB1uS9DvHVcv-nhyphenhyphenuM0c4HBWrr9mgbk7jlEWtiL91HBamhhqS3BXuc7K64f65qDtRJtwhm1XNm4v5glV_x6v-tXBxIri6Sj2hoHQ2rVDCoA9GytZx17RCsOF8qy7xx07RCdDkBa/s320/Sublian+Festival5.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">One interesting program during the celebration is the <a href="http://bestphilippinefestivals.blogspot.com/2011/11/sublian-festival-in-batangas.html">Lupaka</a>n (making of a snack called nilupak) at <a href="http://bestphilippinefestivals.blogspot.com/2011/11/sublian-festival-in-batangas.html">Awitan</a> (singing) held at the People’s Quadrangle. Here you can catch a glimpse of how the native snack nilupak is made. And at the same time have a taste of the delectable snack.</span> <br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">The festival was first started to celebrate the feast of the Sto. Nino. It is now a vehicle to promote Iloilo as <a href="http://bestphilippinefestivals.blogspot.com/2011/10/dinagyang-festival.html">a tourist and investment destination</a>.</span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">The performances have awed audiences because of its spectacle - the choreography, costumes and music are very impressive. </span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Through the years, the festival has gained national prominence and recognition by winning the national street dancing competition. </span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Penagbenga Festival (English: Flower Festival) is a month-long annual flower festival occurring in Baguio, the summer capital of the Philippines.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">The festival, held during the month of February, was created as a tribute to the city's flowers and as a way to rise up from the devastation of the 1990 Luzon earthquake. The festival includes floats that are decorated with flowers like those used in Pasadena's Rose Parade. The festival also includes <a href="http://street%20dancing/">street dancing</a>, presented by <a href="http://dancers%20clad%20in%20flower-inspired%20costumes/">dancers clad in flower-inspired costumes</a>, that is inspired by the Bendian, an Ibaloi dance of celebration that came from the Cordillera region.</span><br />

<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Adding color and gaiety to Angono town fiesta, celebrated early the 23rd of November, are the "Higantes" <a href="http://bestphilippinefestivals.blogspot.com/2011/10/feast-of-san-clemente.html">paper mache of giants</a> measuring from four to five feet in diameter and ten to twelve feet in height. Angono, Rizal's joyous major festival in honor of <a href="http://bestphilippinefestivals.blogspot.com/2011/10/feast-of-san-clemente.html">feast of San Clemente</a> (<a href="http://bestphilippinefestivals.blogspot.com/2011/10/feast-of-san-clemente.html">patron saint of fishermen</a>) whose image, glorious in papal vestment, is carried by male devotees during a procession accompanied by "pahadores” (devotees dressed in colorful local costumes or fishermen’s <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD11">clothes</span>, wooden shoes and carrying boat paddles, fish nets, traps, etc.) and “higantes" (giant paper mache images). The street event <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD9"><u>f</u>inishes</span> in a <a href="http://bestphilippinefestivals.blogspot.com/2011/10/feast-of-san-clemente.html">fluvial procession in Laguna de Bay</a> amidst revelry that continues until the image is brought back to its sanctuary.</span><br />

</span></span><span style="color: black; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">The “higante” tradition began when Angono was a Spanish hacienda. The hacienda owners concerned about <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD1">costs,</span> prohibited all celebrations except for one annual fiesta. </span><span style="color: black; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">The townspeople, concerned about enjoyment, decided to make the best of a bad situation. Using an art form brought from Mexico by Spanish priests, they created larger-than-life caricatures of their Spanish landlords. In typical Filipino fashion, the fiesta become in equal parts, a stunning <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD5">spectacle</span> and a tricky inside joke. </span><br />

With the advent of modernization and technology clay is changed to <a href="http://bestphilippinefestivals.blogspot.com/2011/10/feast-of-san-clemente.html">plaster of Paris</a> and resin. <br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">The festival first began in 1980 during a period of crisis. The province relied on sugar cane as its <a href="http://bestphilippinefestivals.blogspot.com/">primary agricultural crop</a>, and the price of sugar was at an all-time low due to the introduction of sugar substitutes like high fructose corn syrup in the United States. It was also a time of tragedy; on April 22 of that year, the inter-island vessel <a href="http://bestphilippinefestivals.blogspot.com/">Don Juan</a> carrying many Negrenses, including those belonging to prominent families in Bacolod City, collided with the tanker Tacloban City and sank. An estimated 700 lives were lost in the tragedy.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">In the midst of these tragic events, the city's artists, local government and civic groups decided to hold a festival of smiles, because the city at that time was also known as the <a href="http://bestphilippinefestivals.blogspot.com/">City of Smiles</a>. They reasoned that a festival was also a good opportunity to pull the residents out of the pervasive gloomy atmosphere. The initial festival was therefore, a declaration by the people of the city that no matter how tough and bad the times were, Bacolod City is going to pull through, survive, and in the end, triumph.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: large;">From a small town derided for being the capital of a feudal province with a big gap between rich and poor, Bacolod has grown through the decades to become a <a href="http://bestphilippinefestivals.blogspot.com/">cosmopolitan city</a> with malls, fast-food outlets, and convention centers.<br />
<br />
And once a year (late October) Bacolod forgets its troubles and stages its lively Masskara Festival, with its folk art and <a href="http://bestphilippinefestivals.blogspot.com/">masked dancers</a>.</span><br />
